News 8 Unknown Eater
Good music and good food have a lot in common. Our Unknown Eater has had sonnets of appetizers, a crescendo of flavors and the occasional off key dish.
But that’s not the case with the Indigo Café, where a symphony of fine cuisine takes the stage. It’s a restaurant with a musical theme. It’s really cool.
They play blues music all the time and it’s decorated in blue.
The Indigo Café
Just a cozy little Kearny Mesa restaurant filled with lots of regulars who love it there, and a menu that seems to go on forever.
They serve coffee drinks and they have 15 different smoothies. There’s a first rate Very Berry smoothie.
They do vegetarian items, like the excellent black bean soup.
There are sandwiches, soups, salads and wheatgrass… for those healthy drinks.
Their food has a little Creole taste, but there’s more. They have Tortilla Soup that’s a first rate south of the border soup.
So are they a Mexican restaurant? No.
But there’s more to this Jazzy place. All of their desserts are homemade, like the incredible blueberry cheesecake.
So they’re a dessert restaurant? Nope.
They do a little bit of everything and everything I tried at this hard to define diner was good to very good.
The Cajun Jambalaya with Andouille sausage and chicken with a good flavor and a nice spice kick. The chicken tequila penne pasta served with a wonderful tequila cream sauce. The stuffed chicken breast topped with a chili cream sauce has an excellent lightly spiced flavor and that homemade blueberry cheesecake is great.
It’s a symphony of good tastes at the Indigo Café. You can sit down, dance a little and enjoy some first rate eclectic cuisine.

Making Healthy Choices in San Diego Dining
Bellissima Magazine

Indigo Café and Catering in Kearny Mesa is one of my favorite local spots for healthy eating. San Diego locals, Rick and Tiffany Trevino, have owned Indigo Café since June of 2000, and have been committed to using only the freshest ingredients available. Chef Rick, a graduate from San Diego Culinary Institute, and Tiffany both create the recipes served at Indigo Café.
“Offering healthy choices seemed natural because that is the way we prefer to eat and have realized along the way that there are so few choices for healthy meals,“said Tiffany. “One of our not so long term goals is to provide healthy “home meal replacement” options to busy people to take home to their families for dinner. Our customers seem to appreciate all of the healthy options we offer. We have customers that will dine with us up to five times a week”
Indigo Café offers a unique and comfortable ambiance. Walls are decorated with photographs of legendary blues and jazz musicians, while music from albums you rarely hear on mainstream radio inconspicuously fills the room. I’ve been to both locations in San Diego, Downtown at 1435 Sixth Avenue, and Kearny Mesa at 9353 Clairemont Mesa Blvd and the Indigo staff has always been friendly and thorough with my orders.
During the lunch hour at the Kearny Mesa location, they’re normally very busy, but still get orders out in a timely fashion. Indigo Café is not just a great coffee house serving up the “Go Joe” specialty drinks, iced or hot, they offer full meals, daily specials, and several healthy options including homemade soups, wraps(including the most wonderful roasted veggie, herbed goat cheese wrap), a variety of salads(without iceburg lettuce), sandwiches, delicious smoothies, and Cajun specialties, such as blackened fish and black beans. Indigo has 15 different smoothie choices, some with dairy, some without, but any can be changed to use soy instead of regular milk.
When you order a “Tiffany’s Salad” you’ll get mixed field greens with feta cheese, cranberries, raisins and toasted almonds with a sesame vinaigrette dressing. You also have the option to add baked chicken or blackened yellowfin tuna. This salad is so scrumptious, colorful and best of all, healthy.
Ok… first off i need to break it down like this… I AM TOTALLY BIASED! I am leaving a review for a company that has far surpassed my expectations with regards to customer service! A company that has far exceeded my expectations in every form and fashion, and has provided excellent food and service every, single, time! Flattery can be used in a review…. right!?
How ever could I have kept this place away from you my faithful yelp family for so long you may ask…. perhaps its because I am selfish and really don’t want this amazing company to explode into something remotely different from what they are now… AMAZING!!!
When it comes to Indigo Cafe and Catering Tiffany and Gretchen just have it down pat! They understand what good food tastes like, and understand the customer service aspect of business! This is one of those small business you NEED to support in this down economy… now only if i could convince them to open a place in South Bay! Tiffany/Gretchen…. listen to me know… the possibilities are enless in south bay! ;)
Indigo is amazing no just for your own lunch but for catering medium to large scale events. They carry a wide selection of menu items but their wraps are TO DIE FOR!!! I know… you what you are thinking… a wrap? to die for? BUT TRUST me!! Try one and you will be sold! I couldn’t make something more delicious! Ok the mouth watering glands have started and it is FAR too late to be eating… but you get the idea! Stop by one of the locations you will be glad you did!

Tiffany – just a short note to let you how thrilled we were with the job that INDIGO CAFé did at our annual fundraising event. This event determines the success of our fundraising efforts for the year as it accounts for well over half of our budget. We had our recap meeting last night and the feedback from the Board was fantastic. We have been doing this for 7 years and have yet to have this degree of unanimous affirmation. Our board members solicited feedback from the attendees and the results were extremely positive as well.
The food was fantastic and the service was equally professional and attentive. Having spent some years in the restaurant industry, I can appreciate the great job that you and your team accomplished to make our event special. You and your staff were a pleasure to work with, efficient, and caring.
I am pleased to announce that we will be using INDIGO for our catering needs for the De Portola Middle School event on May 30th. We thank you and your staff for making our event special.

Just wanted to say thank you for the job you did catering our wedding on October 27th at Marina Village. Everyone loved the food! You were so helpful in working with us through that freak blackout. And all this on your own wedding anniversary. You and your team were really great and we appreciate it very much.

We really wanted to say thanks again for the awesome food and all your help with our wedding. It was an amazing day for us and we couldn’t have done it all without you.

Last year I was introduced to Indigo Café by a friend who brought me there for lunch and I was so impressed with the quality of their food I spoke with Catering Manager, Gretchen Vedder regarding catering an upcoming event for my office.
The event was a reception for the VIP’s that were to be attending and speaking at the GreenBuild Conference, so while food was a factor, it was only a part of the event. I was hoping to find a caterer who might recycle and serve good food.
When told it was a GreenBuild VIP reception, Gretchen went into over-drive. The selection of food was AMAZING and organic and served on recycled and recyclable plates and napkins. The beer was from a local brewery who’s proceeds benefitted the 9/11 Foundation. The wine was from a local organic winery (and it was wonderful!).
The set up crew and the bartender and were prompt, professional, attentive, courteous and very personable.
Since that evening, Gretchen and Indigo have been my go-to caterers. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, from 2 – 100. And me, being the last-minute-meal-queen, Gretchen has pulled me out of many impossible situations, always with a smile and a rolling tray of fabulous offerings.

I have on several occasions used the services of Indigo Café and Catering to supply food for County of San Diego functions. In each case the food and service was terrific, with no complaints or problems. The delivery was always on time and the food delicious. They have always been available on short notice, and were easy to work with for last minute changes to the menu.
My most recent experience was ordering lunch for a meeting of about 30 people in late September. The multiple-menu options, affordable prices, complete service, and ease of working with Gretchen Vedder, owner, made my task much easier.
One occasion when we used them was for a holiday party for 100 people. They worked with us to get the price within our budget, without sacrificing the quality of the food. They provided more service staff and food quantity than was originally planned.
I am also aware of several other people in this building who use Indigo Café and Catering for County functions, and their experience has always been reported as excellent.
I will continue to use Indigo Café and Catering, and have no reservations offering my highest recommendation for their services. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need additional information.

The San Diego Padres have used Indigo Café for several years to cater miscellaneous meetings held here at the ballpark. Their food, service and reliability have been stellar in all respects and we plan on continuing our relationship with them in the future. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and always willing to accommodate our requests even at the last minute. I highly recommend Indigo Café for anyone’s catering needs.

Thank you for all your help with our training on June 2nd. It’s been a pleasure working with you and the Indigo Café.
Our attendees were impressed by the food and beverage that you provided for us. Your staff was on time and very helpful. I’m sure if we have other trainings in San Diego, your company will be on top of our referral list for catering.
Thanks again for working with me on catering for this training. I appreciate your assistance.

The Golden State Gay Rodeo Association Greater san Diego Chapter would like to provide some information pertaining to Indigo Café and Catering.
The GSGRA-GSDC is a non-profit organization made up entirely of volunteers who produce an amateur yearly rodeo. For the past two years we have contracted with Indigo Café and Catering to be our premier food vendor.
Working with owners, Rick and Tiffany Trevino and Gretchen Vedder has been an exceptional working experience. Their professionalism has been extremely beneficial to our nonprofit organization.
Initially, working with Indigo Café and Catering was a concern as the GSGRA-GSDC has never worked with just one food vendor for our events. However, Indigo Café alleviated our concerns. They were able to provide a menu of various options to meet our selected catering needs and were able to meet our price point. Working with Indigo Café prior to and during the event also provided our organization with the flexibility of not having to worry about our catering needs. They kept us informed, were prompt, and were prepared for the event.
Over the past two years, we have had numerous positive comments from our attendees on the quality of the food, quantity of the food for price and the selection of items to choose. In the past, rodeo food items consisted of hamburgers and hotdogs. With Indigo Café we had not only the traditional hamburgers and hotdogs, but a fine selection of different wraps, salads, smoothies and other items to meet vegetarian and children needs.
Furthermore, Indigo Café has helped our organization to meet both City and County recycling requirements. The City and County of San Diego has requested that events which include non-profits meet various “Green or recycling” standards. Indigo Café helped us by bringing in and using only recyclable material at our venue without raising prices. This helped our organization to recycle more effectively and efficiently. In fact, our organization recycled 89% of our waste from the production of the rodeo, in part to the green or recyclable materials used by Indigo Café.
GSGRA-GSDC is looking forward to continuing our business partnership with Indigo Café for our 2010 Rodeo season and for future years to come.
